The objective was to evaluate the correlation between performance and feeding behavior of feedlot castrated Santa Inês lambs fed without roughage diet, weighing 20 ± 1,8 kg and four months of age (± 0,34). A completely randomized design was adopted. Correlations were obtained by Pearson’s linear correlation analysis and the t test, and processed on SAS software (version 9.2). The variables number of rumination chews per cud, number of cuds ruminated per day, speed of each chew, and number of rumination cuds per day were positively correlated with the variation in body weight (p < 0.05). For number of cuds ruminated per day, a positive correlation was found with the variations in body weight. Initial and final body weights were positively correlated with... |

We evaluated the effect of inclusion of fine mesquite pod meal (FPM) in the diet on performance, preference and palatability of diets in feedlot lambs. Five diets were formulated with increasing levels of FPM (0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0%). For performance evaluation, the design was completely randomized with five treatments and seven replications. For palatability and preference analysis, the same design was used, but the treatments consisted of diets with 0 and 3% FPM and fourteen replications. The palatability was assessed considering the amount of feed consumed within 30 min., and the preference, considering the feed intake after 24 hours. FPM had no influence on weight gain, but caused a reduction in intake and an increase in dry matter digestibility for... |

This study aimed to assess the influence of lamb finishing systems on zootechnical performance, as well as on carcass and meat quality. The experiment was conducted at the APTA’s experimental farm. Thirty-three lambs were used – both sexes, initial age of 90 ± 3 days, Texel with Santa Inês, each animal being one experimental unit, with 6 males and 5 females per treatment. Treatments consisted of: lambs finished on pasture, in semi-feedlot or in feedlot. The lambs were slaughtered with average live weight of 35 kg. Weight gain and carcass measures were taken by ultrasound. After slaughter, carcass conformation and yield, pH, temperature, color, water retention capacity and tenderness were measured. Animals finished on pasture had lower weight gain, were... |

ABSTRACT: The aim of this review is to show and illustrate an way clear and objective of the aspects involved in the artificial insemination in sheep. In this species the potential is great, therefore it is early in its productive and reproductive aspects, with eminence to the short interval between generations. In the program of artificial insemination (AI) the evaluation of the reproductive male is important and testicle, scrotal sac, penis and prepuce must be observed, and still, good libido, masculine aspects and espermograma inside of the normality standards. Some forms of collection and semen manipulation are described. The females must be selected by weight and age, or when reach 65% a 70% of adult weight, and that form reaches the sexual maturity.... |
